Pinboard Project

Digital, Wireframing, User Flows, Marvel, Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator

Whilst scrolling through Instagram I came up with an idea. I had seen a photo of something in Barcelona posted by Dezeen and I thought to myself when/if I ever visit Barcelona I would love to remember that was there and go see it. If only there was a way to keep a log of these things and, specifically, save their location.

This led to my idea of being able to pin photos with location data to a digital map of the world. A mixture of Instagram, Google Maps and Pinterest. I was also inspired by the "Places" photo album on iPhones, which organises your photos based on where they were taken and allows you to zoom in and out on the world map. I thought the output of this idea could be a feature on Instagram or even an app or website in its own right.

I think this idea could be useful not only for travellers, but also for planning things to do in your own city. For example, if you saw a photo of really nice looking food from a cafe across town you could pin it to your board. Then when you next visit that area you might look on your map to see if there is anything you wanted to do there and remember about the cafe.

To practise my digital prototyping skills I decided to try and design it as a feature on Instagram first. To begin this process I studied the interface of Instagram, including the layout, what takes you where, similar add on features like shopping and people tagging. I drew wireframes to figure out where my feature could fit in.

After studying the app, I then starting planning how the feature could be integrated. I thought 3 scenarios when the user would interact with the feature:

1. Uploading a photo and tagging it with a pin

2. Pinning someone else's photo

3. Accessing and looking at your map of the world pinboard

I drew some basic wireframes and designed the user journey for each scenario. I then took photos of these sketches and created a clickable prototype with Marvel on my phone. This can be seen in the videos below.

This process led to the idea of being able to comment and tag friends when pinning someone's photo. "@friend we should check this out!".

To make a higher fidelity prototype I used Adobe XD. I downloaded some Instagram UI templates and used screenshots from my phone to mock up the same three scenarios as above.

Another area of my idea that I've been thinking about is the icon design. Instagram uses a variety of icon styles and so I designed a pin logo matching these styles.
